ABOUT TEST
– Human papilloma viruses (HPV) are composed of an icosahedral viral particle (virion) containing an 8000 base pair double-stranded circular DNA molecule surrounded by a protein capsid. HPV is passed on through genital (skin to skin) contact, most often during vaginal or anal sex. HPV may also be passed on during oral sex. There are more than 100 different types of HPV. Some of these are “low-risk” and cause genital warts while “high-risk” types can cause cervical or other types of genital cancer. The high-risk HPV types may also cause a form of throat cancer, called oropharyngeal cancer.
To date, HPV cannot be cultured in vitro, and immunological tests are inadequate to determine the presence of HPV. PCR is a sensitive and specific molecular technique in which a particular segment of HPV DNA is amplified to a detectable concentration. The HPV screening PCR assay described here is a highly specific and sensitive qualitative assay used for the detection of HPV DNA.
